MURDERER: Carola Arnau

A couple going through a “somewhat” bitter but escalating divorce led to a devastating double murder-suicide during the early hours of June 6th 2017.

Carola and Miguel Arnau had been married for around ten years with two young children when Carola filed for divorce on February 22nd 2016. She described the marriage as “irretrievably broken”.

Just a year later, Carola filed for a protection from abuse order accusing Miguel of “inappropriate contact” with their four-year-old son. The claim was dismissed as unfounded by Children and Youth Services.
During this time, Miguel’s parental rights were temporarily suspended. All rights were restored on April 4th after Carola withdrew the protection order.
Miguel would then sue for custody of the children, being granted a temporary order giving him shared custody. They split care every other weekend and after school until 7 pm.
By April 20th, Miguel would drop the complaint against Carola, stating they would resolve the issues privately.

On June 6th 2017, first responders found a shocking scene after arriving at the Arnau residence with reports of a fire inside the property.

The day prior, Carola had purchased a gun. It’s now believed the weapon was purchased with the intention of, at the very least, suicide in mind. It came as a shock to neighbours who described the family as “very nice” and said they got along with everyone on the street. Miguel Arnau, Carola’s estranged husband and the father of the two children, wasn’t in the house at the time of the shooting.

It’s not exactly clear if the family would like to keep the children’s names private, and for this, I will not include their names in this post.
Arnau started with her 10-year-old daughter, shooting her multiple times in the head while she slept in bed. She then moved on to her 4-year-old son, shooting him multiple times in the body.

Arnau then went on to set many small fires around the home with an unnamed accelerant. The largest of which was located inside the detached garage that Miguel was living out of at the time. She then, once back in the room with her children’s bodies, turned the gun on herself.

First responders were called for the fires in the home around 3:20 am, they would be the ones to find the three dead in a bedroom. They also found the family dog’s body inside the home. Arnau’s gun was still beside her almost completely confirming the tragedy as a murder-suicide.

KIDNAPPED: Steven Stayner & Timmy White

The kidnapping that shows brotherhood comes in many forms, a teenager saving a child after seeing his distress. Steven Stayner was walking home from school on December 4th 1972 when he was stopped by a man claiming to be a church representative seeking donations. When the man asked if Steven’s mom would be willing to give something to the church, Steven agreed that she would. The representative offered to give Steven a ride to his home so they could get the donations that very day. A white Buick driven by a second man pulled up, Steven willingly got inside with the representative. However, the church representative wasn’t legitimate. His name was Ervin Murphy a worker from a Yosemite National Park resort worker who had been manipulated by a co-worker into aiding him in kidnapping a boy. Kenneth Parnell claimed he was an aspiring minister and wanted a young boy to “raise him in a religious-type deal”. Parnell drove Murphy and Steven to a cabin nearby Catheys Valley rather than taking St...

MURDER: Etan Patz

One of the first milk carton kids whose kidnapping and murder took nearly four decades to solve. It was the last day of school before Memorial Day weekend, May 25th 1979, and the Patz household was hectic. Everyone was busy getting ready for their days, Julie was taking care of her two-year-old son and another two-year-old that had stayed the night and Stanley was getting himself ready for work as a photographer. Shira, the oldest of their three children, was getting herself dressed for her school day. That left Etan Patz, the six-year-old that was searching for more independence, he too was dressing for a day at school. He put on blue pants, a blue jacket and his favourite black Eastern Airlines future flight captain cap. After he was dressed Etan went to Julie and begged that she allowed him to walk the two blocks from their apartment to his daily bus stop. Begrudgingly, Julie agreed and once her son had packed his elephant print tote bag with his favourite toys, she wa...
